The Kauhale Initiative is designed to rapidly increase the availability of deeply affordable housing inventory across the State of Hawaiʻi. It is a promising solution to Hawaiʻi's homelessness crisis.
HomeAid Hawaiʻi, in partnership with the State, plans to develop 12 Kauhale communities by the end of the Governor’s first term. Subscribe below to receive progress updates and learn how you can get involved.
HomeAid Hawaiʻi is a local non-profit developer, positioning us to partner with communities and organizations to bring Kauhale to life. Our focus is on progress, not profits, with the vision of making Kauhale sustainable through private funding.
Please consider giving to the Kauhale Fund. Your contribution goes directly to building these life-changing communities.

Kauhale are communities based on trauma-informed design, which enable independent living in small residential units with shared community facilities such as bathrooms, kitchens, gardens, and common areas.
Kauhale communities are built for residents who are experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.
Each tiny home unit costs approximately $16k per unit to build. When including infrastructure costs, the average cost per unit is $50k.
Based on a combination of data and community feedback, we identify and assess plots of land to find the best locations for Kauhale. We hold community meetings to ensure residents understand the process and how Kauhale will benefit the area.
