The first phase of Hoʻokahi Leo Kauhale was completed with 20 new units located off Middle Street near Kalihi's Transit Center. Phase two includes plans for both single- and double-occupancy units and a community center, where the full build-out is expected to house more than 50 people. Laura Mae Duclayan, who has lived unhoused for many years at Sand Island Beach Park, said, “Many of us have waited years for a place to call home. Not a temporary shelter or transitional place, but somewhere that gives us stability and the opportunity to rebuild a sense of community.” Hoʻokahi Leo Kauhale addresses this need for long-term housing that fosters healing and community connections in the Honolulu metro area.
