A First Look at Ka Malu Ko‘olau’s Upgraded Communal Facilities

HomeAid Hawai‘i has completed a significant upgrade to Ka Malu Ko‘olau Kauhale's shared spaces. The 31-bed village had relied for nearly two years on temporary trailers for bathrooms and showers. Those older structures have now been replaced with permanent communal facilities designed to improve daily living conditions for residents.

The project introduced a new communal kitchen, a small community center, restroom and shower modules, a laundry facility, and expanded outdoor decks. All new units were connected to permanent water, sewer, and electrical systems, replacing the temporary infrastructure that supported the original trailers.

Construction wrapped just before Thanksgiving, allowing HomeAid's team to cook for residents and gather.

For a site that helped shape the early development of the kauhale model, the upgrades represent a meaningful investment in long-term community stability.
