Aura has faced homelessness and the hardship of raising two children with serious medical needs. Today, she is living at Ka Malu Ko‘olau Kauhale while studying microbiology at Windward Community College, where she is now a second-year biology student with dreams of working in gene therapies, inspired by her two sons who suffer from a genetic blood disorder.

“I have been struggling with homelessness and everything that comes with it,” Aura says. “If it wasn’t for this opportunity, I probably would have been derailed.”

Now, she finally has a space to call her own. “I have a door that I can close.”

For Aura, that simple act represents safety, dignity, and a new beginning. Her education has become a pathway forward, giving her structure and a sense of hope for the future.

“I have had a journey that was humbling enough to say that I love this opportunity and I'm grateful for it,” she says. “I'm most proud of not quitting.”

Homelessness does not look the same for everyone, and the Kauhale Initiative is helping people at every stage of recovery find stability, community, and hope.
