Kauhale Living is HomeAid Hawaiʻi’s approach to the Kauhale Initiative. Our work often begins with assessing land for potential sites, followed by thoughtful planning and design to meet each community's unique needs. We collaborate with local stakeholders to establish a welcoming environment and distinct identity for every Kauhale. Our role also includes developing vital infrastructure and selecting or constructing homes and communal facilities. Once the development is complete, we hand it off to service providers who nurture the community and offer ongoing support.
In some cases, we expand our efforts through Kauhale management services—a human-centric property management service that goes beyond traditional practices. Our goal is to provide residents not only with a place to live but also with the grace and support they need to regain stability at their own pace, gradually working toward paying rent. This approach fosters a path toward a more sustainable, self-sufficient community over time.
To showcase the impact of the communities we’ve helped build, we launched the Kauhale Living Video series. This series shares residents' stories, highlighting how thoughtfully designed and well-managed communities can make a lasting difference. By capturing these experiences, we hope to illustrate the need for Kauhales and the transformative power of a supportive, community-first approach.
As the Kauhale concept evolves, it has the potential to set a new standard for addressing homelessness—not just in Hawaiʻi, but nationwide. With the right partnerships and continued support, Kauhale Living could become a model for a scalable, compassionate solution to one of society's most pressing challenges.
