We often overlook those experiencing homelessness, forgetting that behind every tent or tarp is a person with talents, stories, and purpose. Aunty Kehau is one of those people.

She has lived on and off the streets since 2003. Most recently, she was viciously attacked by 10 dogs near her apartment. The injuries left her unable to work, and without income, she could no longer afford rent. She ended up at Sand Island, where transportation and simply getting around became a daily struggle. But through it all, her perspective never wavered.

“All of us have hidden talents. We just have to tap into it and give people purpose, so that they can show themselves as well as the public who they really are. Because we all bleed red blood.”

Moving into Hoʻokahi Leo Kauhale was one of the best days of her life.

Hoʻokahi Leo Kauhale, built by HomeAid Hawai‘i in partnership with the State of Hawai‘i, provides 20 homes for those who previously lived at the Sand Island encampment and is now operated and managed by Hawaiʻi Health & Harm Reduction Center.

Phase II will bring an additional 30 homes for those who need it most.
